It breaks my heart to see children learn history in a dry, dreary way so that they think history is boring. History is thrilling!

God’s wisdom and grace is revealed in Creation and the rise and fall of nations. We believe the Bible is true so we teach from a Christian worldview.

Our curriculum is filled with Charlotte Mason-inspired living books of all kinds—great works, historical fiction, classic literature, original documents, and easy-to-understand non-fiction.

We also believe that children remember what they learn if they get their hands messy crafting, creating, playing, mapping, and experimenting.

Finally, we teach in a practical way so that our children can apply what they learn in real-life situations today and in the future.

Families Learning Together: American History

We love studying American history together as a family, even if each children is reading different living books or textbooks. There is so much we can do together like reading aloud, timelines, poetry, drama, games, crafts, maps, dressing up, acting it out, art appreciation, singing, music appreciation, and all kinds of writing projects.

Our curriculum works for all ages from preschool to high school so that families can make memories together as they learn about our Christian heritage and American exceptionalism.

This is how we have studied American history and highly recommend it!

Timelines & Cookbooks

Timelines give us a birds-eye view of history. Children connect people and events with each other. They are a staple in our history courses.

Food is a delicious way to travel back in time. Everyone loves to cook and bake, or at least eat!

Our hunt for historical recipes has led us to museums and old cookbooks. When we dig up the old recipes, we update and tweak them to our modern tastes. Sometimes, we research crops and food for a particular place or kingdom; then we create our own dishes. All that to say, we have a blast adding food to our history studies!

Lapbooks

Lapbooks are a creative way to learn and create a treasured keepsake. Children learn about a subject and then create little booklets. After the booklets are completed, they are positioned inside a folder to create a treasured keepsake.

HIS Story of the 20th Century

The 20th Century is an exciting time of change! At the turn of the century, folks were traveling by horse and buggy and by the end people were rocketing through space. Come discover the stories, miracles, intrigues, battles, discoveries, heroes, and villains!

There were terrible times of evil, too, and yet God’s brilliant light pierced the darkness.

The 572-page textbook, HIS Story of the 20th Century explores world history decade by decade opening each chapter with a fictional vignette.  This gives the student a feel for the decade. You will find timeline information at the beginning of each decade and a fun history lab at the end of every chapter. There are also movie and living book suggestions for each decade! The textbook is written in a conversational-style perfect for reading aloud to the whole family!

There are 2 workbooks (high school & middle school) containing end-of-the-chapter questions, hands-on activities, timeline pages, timeline figures, design opportunities, and writing projects to go along with the textbook.

Oh, and don’t forget the cookbook! HIS Story of the 20th Century Cookbook has mouth-watering recipes from each decade that will be fun to make and yummy to eat.

History Parties

We add history labs to our history studies.

They are of a wide variety: building a skyscraper out of cardboard boxes (1930’s), splatter painting (20th Century Art), playing baseball (1910’s), making paper plate Roman standards (Ancient Rome), having our own Grand Prix (20th Century Racing), making drama masks to act our Aesop’s Fables (Ancient Greece), and having our own Passover Feast (Ancient Israel).

Sometimes, we take history labs a step further and throw a party! We make it a special event, inviting friends and family. History parties make learning history super-fun!
